Chinese Dialects and Written Characters

Although over one billion Chinese people speak some form of Chinese, there are many different dialects. Historically, the Chinese have grown up speaking the dialect from the region where they were born. If they have gone through formal educational training, however, they have learned a "classical" form of the language that is not specific to any regional dialect. This writing system has two forms: simplified Chinese characters and traditional Chinese characters.

From the 1950s onwards, the classical (“traditional”) written language was replaced with a more “simplified” one in mainland China so as to help increase the levels of literacy in the Chinese mainland. It is called "simplified Chinese", as pen-strokes in many Chinese characters are reduced. The use of simplified Chinese characters has now become widespread in China and Singapore, while people living in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao continue to use the traditional, non-simplified Chinese characters.
